At the beginning of our recent three week holiday in the Lake District I said that we planned to roam far and wide; we did not. Generally the weather was better where we were (and very hot during the first week) although we did go to the Ullswater area (couldn't park), the northern fells, Buttermere and finished with a day on Sergeant Man and High Raise via Easedale Tarn.
It was an immensely enjoyable trip and I even managed to post regularly, though whether I'll bother to do that again remains to be seen. There is no doubt that posts are a useful personal record but I think most people much prefer to read about long walks in far off (or not so far off) lands, so I'm not sure the blog needs to be public any more. In any event Lynne keeps a diary!
While we were away I received a comment from one Geoff Jackson on my post concerning Keen Arroyo Sandals. Don't know if anyone agrees with Geoff but I did not!

Now home for a bit, Braemar in September then we pick up the new car in October, assuming it's built on schedule.

I disagree with your thoughts Gibson. Whether it's a long walk in far off lands or a wet tour of the Buttermere fells I still enjoy reading about trips into the outdoors. I enjoy your blog and its always one I look out for. I may be wrong but I feel that people are reading blogs more on phones and its a bit more of a chore to comment. My blog hits are still thankfully high but comments have fell. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Alan. Getting comments is of course always nice - a sort of feedback, but I've never really received many so I'm not concerned about that. I often don't comment on blogs since I have to sign in to do so, even on my own blog! Generally speaking I think it's easier to write interesting stuff day after day on a long walk. Perhaps it's significant that one long time follower has recently, I think, removed me from their blog list which is fair enough, although I can't think why. No matter, it's not a life or death issue!
I always read your blog and a few others because they always contain interesting information, often about areas I've never visited.

I'd be happier if you stayed public, Gibson; purely for selfish reasons - I like reading your blog! I'm struggling a bit with the move to Wordpress, but I do intend to persevere; it (blogging) is only a hobby and we all should take a break when it now and again becomes a chore.
I wouldn't think that the number of comments is a reflection of the volume of readers; I'll often read blog posts, enjoy them, but not comment. I've noticed that Steve (Fellfinder) has posted less of late and he's another whose posts I miss. Sometimes life gets in the way a bit.

Good of you to say so Dave. As I said to AlanR, comments are welcome but essentially I was just expressing my view that the sort of things I was posting about had limited interest and making the blog private would allow me to record the day without paying attention to whether it was reasonably acceptable to others! The more I review posts before publishing the worse they get.
I also have a Wordpress account which I fiddle with occasionally and also struggle, perhaps because between visits I forget everything I previously learned. I'm sure you will soon master Wordpress and we can all look forward to more good writing from you.

Please accept my apologies for not keeping up, Gibson, but I've had quite a bit on my plate lately (been a bit under the weather).
I would miss your blog a lot if yo went 'private' - and as said by Alan R, I've been popping in from my mobile phone and I find tapping the tiny keys a complete and utter pain in the bottom!

As for phones, I find a physical keyboard much easier to use than the virtual things and while I am tempted from time to time to get an iPhone, I think I'd be better off with the new BlackBerry Classic.

I'd just like to record my thanks for your comments on my recent long walk. The frequent comments from a handful of readers really did help entertain me and keep me going on what otherwise may have been some fairly lonely days.
You'll see that I have now reverted to the 'diary for friends and family' sort of postings, the value of which you are debating. Whilst not of any great literary or photographic merit, these postings are actually of more interest to some readers than are the 'long walk' postings. It's also handy sometimes to be able to refer back to them.

Thanks Martin. I think we all got an immense amount of pleasure following you from the Atlantic to the Med. The iPad and guidebook were the first thing I reached for in the morning.
I'm sure you are right regarding the 'family and friends' type posts.
