Alan - the Americano was average at best and the blueberry and almond cake was tasteless. 2xcoffee+1cake was £8.50. Lynne nicked a bit of cake but didn't come back for more.
Gibson, I agree; I think we expect to pay a bit of a premium for decent coffee and freshly made cake, and that's fine so long as they are... well, decent and freshly made. But the quality can be inconsistent - and that's being very polite!
And yet, there's a little kiosk on one of our local railway stations - no bigger than a decent-sized cupboard - where they knock up an excellent cup of filter coffee (or 'Americano' as it's described on the menu) for about 60% of the price of the Costa one stop down the line. The fact that the girl who's usually in charge of brewing is young, lissom, olive-skinned and with a smile to brighten the greyest of midlands days (and that's some level of greyness we're talking about) is of absolutely no consequence to a man of my age.

I hope it was as nice as the cake probably was.
Hand-grenade?

Sir Hugh - I think it was a large coffee bean from which far too many cups of coffee had been brewed.
That's disappointing, for £8.50 it should be praiseworthy at least. Cafe Nero charge about that for the same goods in Manchester.
Hi Alan. It's also a typical charge here and I'll happily pay it for good coffee and cake.

Sadly.
We have nothing locally like your kiosk Dave. Birnam Arts coffee and cake is consistently good we find at around the usual price.
As regards your kiosk girl: I couldn't possibly comment.
