I'm not a football fan, but my commiserations to any readers of this blog south of the border who are!

On balance, we (collectively) haven't done badly when it comes to attracting big international events. We had Euro 96, the rugby world cup, the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and will again in 2014, both formats of cricket world cup (ODI; 20:20); World and European indoor athletics championships, and so on ... Plus we get more than our fair share of the European hostings of The Ryder Cup.
I think sometimes you have to be philosophical and accept that it's just somebody else's turn.
Just as an aside, I saw a post on a website today suggesting that Qatar, the 2022 host country, is not much more than half of the size of Wales. Whether that was an exaggeration I'm not sure.

And the Olympics of course. Not sure about the size of Qatar.
Half the size of Wales is about right apparently:
Qatar 11437sq km and Wales 20779 sq km.
