...the Hielan' Hills o' Mar

DOLOMITES by J C Milne

O I gaed furth and far awa to see what I cou'd see,
And loshtie! siccan heichts o' Hills I nivver thocht cou'd be!
I lookit lang and lookit at yon grander Hills afar
Till I fairly taint a notion o' the Hielan Hills o' Mar.

'Twis here I cam' and hame again fae yonner faur I'd been,
And day and nicht yon fremmit hills were aye afore ma een!
Till "Dyod!" thinks I, "I doot my lad, ye mebbe micht dae waur
Than tak' a dauner westward to the Hielan' Hills o' Mar".

Ay, there they were, like brithers, Ben Macdhui, Carn Toul,
Braeriach, Cairngorm - man, a sicht to sair the sowl!
And braid Ben A'an and Beinn a' Bhuird, and yonner Lochnagar,
A' noddin-aul' and neibourlike, the Hielan' Hills o' Mar!

And govie dick! at gloamin-time, maist Hielan' time o' a'!
The young and lordly Dolomites gaed worth and clean awa!
And left a leear thinkin, "Though ye've traivelled furth and far,
Ye hinna traivelled far'er than the Hielan Hills o' Mar".

Love it, Gibson

That's a cheeky grin you have there on C an t-SM.
:-)
I've no doubt after next year's TGO I'll be back sometime. The Cairngorms are mighty, and if you look towards the centre, you'll not be spotting the whirlygigs. I'm planning to do more in the north west and up to Sutherland. On my Lejog that was the area that I found inspirational. Unfortunately the backpacker's paradise of the Monadh Liath is doomed, so I doubt if I'll be back there after 2015.

I knew you'd recognise C an t-SM. Everywhere always seems so tame after a trip to the north west and Sutherland. Always hard to leave.

It was on our Challenge route too. However we contoured around the 900 metre height to the south and didn’t hit the summit. The clag was down and we wouldn’t have seen anything. We headed for Broad Cairn.

Hi Alan

I think most Challengers at some point cross C an t-SM. I've also used the route you mention if I'm not summit bound, even in good weather.
